Old School Bodybuilding Supplements

Back in the golden era days, supplements were very slim, so they did they best they could by eating foods that were high in protein. Beef, eggs, milk, chicken and fish were big in many bodybuilder's diets along with protein snacks of things like cheese omelets and cottage cheese.

One of the things that most bodybuilders commonly used in the golden era were pills that contained hydrochloric acid used as a digestive enhancer.

The early protein supplements were made from soy and even dehydrated fish powder, some of these tased terrible. Rheo Blair came out with a milk and egg protein powder that both tasted good and worked great. He also produced very potent amino acid supplements.

Desiccated liver were also taken by bodybuilders in the golden era. This supplement (also known as "liver tabs") was hugely popular in the bodybuilding culture back in the 60's and 70's. Desiccated liver tablets come from the liver of beef cattle. Its health benefits are primarily from the fact that it provides essential amounts of B vitamins, iron (natural as opposed to synthetic) and folic acid. Although it is not being used nearly as much as it was in its heyday, many older bodybuilders still include this supplement in their training. Although you can get some of the same benefits by consuming beef livers themselves (which was common when I was growing up), you would have to eat a lot of liver to get the same amount of concentrated nutrients found in liver tabs. They use to take at least 50 of these pills in just one day.
